MOOF-AFRICA, (Mount Kenya Organic Farming) in Africa-Kenya, is a local professional Responsible Social Entrepreneurship, organization, based in Nanyuki, Kenya, about 200 Kms North of Nairobi. MOOF was established in 2002 and was legally registered as a professional Non-Governmental Organization, NGO, in 2002 to work with poor and needy smallholder farmers in Kenya.
MOOF works with local farmers’ communities around Mt. Kenya region, sensitizing them on the need for embracing Sustainable Agriculture; exploring new possibilities in agriculture (Permaculture techniques) towards food production, Agribusiness, creating employment among the youth, conserving the environment and especially the Mt. Kenya forest. This is a water catchment for millions of people in Kenya. The organization also offers hands- on practical training to local out- grower farmers contracted by large scale farms and especially women and youth farmers on sustainable agriculture practices based on Regenerative agro- ecological and organic farming technologies. These trainings and demonstrations are conducted with the aim of helping the smallholder farmers achieve food security and economic independence through enhanced production of food crops towards food security, Value addition, marketing for income generation of high value horticultural and fresh organic vegetables and herbs crops.
The MOOF Centre has a 6 acres farm for Permaculture and Organic Farming, demonstration and training. The facility is equipped with 6 desktop computers, is supplied with electricity from the mains, a fast Wi-Fi Internet connection and piped water. MOOF also has a big conference hall with a capacity of 200 people seated, which is used when training farmers, 23 pax beds for accommodation of trainers, a working kitchen and Organic Restaurant and neighboring many smallholder and fresh produce farmers.
The Centre is only 300 meters off the Nanyuki-Nyeri highway. The Founder Director Mr. Peter Murage, is guided by the board of directors comprising of 6 directors, Peter runs the organization in a daily basis.
