Making resolutions for the new year is a tradition dating back many years. It’s good to challenge yourself with new goals. However, as climate change and environmental issues continue to worsen, we must make lifestyle changes to benefit the planet.
Not sure how to get start on making sustainable resolutions? Check out these ten simple examples you can start with:
1. Use other means of transportation (walking, biking, buses/trains)
Cars account for a lot of carbon dioxide emissions, so limit the amount of times you drive your car and make sure to not idle as this pollutes the air. Opt for walking or biking when you can. If available. take public transit. Walking or biking is also a healthy way to get exercise.
2. Ditch plastic shopping bags
When shopping for groceries, clothes, and other items, bring reusable shopping bags with you to avoid using the in-store plastic options. You can roll up some bags and fit them in your purse or keep some in your car.
3. Air dry your clothing
Our dryers use a huge amount of energy for each load of clothes. Use a clothesline or drying rack instead. On warm days, especially in the summer, use sunlight to dry your clothes. Not only is air drying more sustainable but you’ll also save on your electricity bill.
4. Buy second-hand clothes
Though it is tempting to buy trendy clothing, choose second-hand clothes instead to save money and the planet. You can get some from thrift stores or friends and family. You’ll be shocked at the quality clothes you can find!
Also, take advantage of the new year to review the clothes in your closet and donate the ones you no longer need for someone else to wear.
5. Grow a garden
Growing and eating your own fruits and vegetables is a healthier option than relying on the often processed and less nutritious options at the store. You will also feel proud to cook with ingredients you grew yourself. Transporting produce to grocery stores leads to a large amount of emissions. By growing produce in your own home, you’ll help reduce this environmental damage.
6. Eat or use leftovers!
Food waste is a big problem for many reasons. Aside from being wasteful, it contributes to climate change and food insecurity. Instead of throwing food away, try turning your leftovers into a new dish or composting it.
7. No more plastic bottles
Make it your goal to stop using plastic bottles all together. Plastic does not degrade easily and the oil used in plastic bottles is also detrimental to the environment. Reusable bottles are a much more sustainable solution. There are many options on the market to keep drinks cold or hot for long periods of time.
8. Opt for email receipts
Another easy change you can make is to have your receipts emailed to you when you shop and cut down on paper waste. It is also easier to locate an emailed receipt if you want to return a product or request a refund.
9. Shop local!
This has recently been a common piece of advice and it still sends a strong message. Shopping locally is important for the environment and economy alike. Supporting local farmers, as well as reducing your commute to get food on the table, benefits all. You reduce greenhouse gas emissions because the food doesn’t have to travel so far to get to your plate.
10. Teach kids a green lifestyle
The best way to ensure a green future for generations to come is to teach your kids the important of sustainability by being a good example. Lead by your actions and get them involved by challenging them to follow these tips in the new year.
At Green Schools Green Future, we aim to educate our youth about environmental challenges and sustainable solutions in hands-on ways. From technological advances to aquaponic farming, we have a wide-ranging curriculum to teach the green lifestyle.
Let’s make this new year a more sustainable one to preserve our planet.
