As we embrace the sunshine and the arrival of spring, it’s a great time to discuss the wide array of fresh produce this season offers.

Spring fruits and vegetables are not only packed with nutrients, but they also feature unique and enhanced flavors. These include fresh herbs, fennel, asparagus, rhubarb, beetroot, and so much more! Seasonal produce is harvested at its peak ripeness, ensuring it retains the highest nutritional value. Fresh fruits and vegetables are juicier and richer in essential vitamins and minerals.

Sustainable eating is one area of focus for GSGF’s projects to spread environmental education and awareness. Keep reading to learn about the importance of incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your diet, which spring produce to try, and how to prepare them!

The Importance of Fresh Produce

Fruits and vegetables are a cornerstone of any healthy eating plan. By incorporating a variety of fruits and vegetables into our meals, we can lower the risk of heart disease and other health issues. Nutrients such as fiber, minerals, and vitamins are abundant in these foods.

It’s especially important to get a proper intake of dark green vegetables every day. Different colored vegetables offer different nutrients, and dark green ones are particularly rich in folate and calcium.

Additionally, it’s important to include orange produce in your diet a few times a week, as it’s high in vitamin A. To maintain optimal health, aim for a diverse mix of fruits and vegetables in your daily meals.

Why Choose Local and Seasonal Produce?

Consuming local, seasonal produce has multiple benefits for both our health and the environment. By eating foods that are in season and grown nearby, we not only enjoy fresher, more flavorful ingredients, but we also make environmentally responsible choices.

Supporting local farmers promotes sustainable food systems and reduces the carbon footprint associated with long-distance food transportation. Since locally grown produce is picked at its peak ripeness and doesn’t have to be shipped far, it retains more nutrients and tastes better. The less time between harvest and consumption, the fewer nutrients are lost.
