The State of Messy Writing
Have you ever apologized or joked about your messy writing or poor spelling? If so, please believe me when I say your current experience does not need to be permanent. I’ve been helping adults and children improve literacy skills for 25 years and have seen firsthand that it is possible to turn messy writing into picture-perfect printing in a matter of hours.
Messy writing (aka dysgraphia) is not something to be ignored, but it has been. Not a lot of research has focused on dysgraphia, possibly because dictionaries define “dysgraphia” as being “caused by a neurological disorder for which there is no cure”. This is a shame because according to a 2019 survey, as many as 40% of American adults can’t read their own writing and 27% are “terrified” to write in front of others.
The Gap in Research
I have seen firsthand how the distraction of messy writing and the range of emotions it can evoke impacts productivity and mental wellness…Is it possibly affecting your productivity or that of your employees?
If studies were being done, researchers may find as I have that many literacy, learning, and focus issues signal a critical gap in literacy foundation that is often misunderstood and underappreciated. As someone who has worked with adults and children struggling with literacy issues for more than 25 years, I have seen that the effect of these gaps takes many forms. Messy writing, poor spelling, slow reading, trouble expressing thoughts, and even ADHD frequently occur when there is confusion about the letters.
Solutions for Messy Writing
The process for resolving this confusion is remarkably simple. By relearning the alphabet with your hands, eyes, and imagination, not only do frustrating issues resolve, but new adaptation, connection, and communication skills appear –- and your identity opens up to new possibilities.
Neuroplasticity, a groundbreaking concept, reveals that our brains possess incredible potential for growth and change. Unfortunately, this is not widely understood or applied by many educators — yet. What an exciting time to be alive as education models begin to integrate new possibilities!
I facilitate a two-day process where participants see their hands do things they could not do the day before. It has been my great joy to observe neuroplasticity in action. It’s not in your imagination; it’s right before your eyes. It’s also not uncommon for people to laugh out loud when they witness the shift. One 80-year-old man told me recently that his euphoria still exists three years after doing the process!
