Volunteering together as a family is a wonderful way to bond, make memories, and make a difference. The Toronto area offers plenty of options for fun, family-friendly opportunities. Here are 3 great ideas to get your crew involved, plus tips for choosing the right fit.

1. Plant trees and flowers for a community garden or urban park

Spending time outside while helping your local environment is a win-win for families. The city’s “Volunteer with the City” program includes opportunities like tree-planting, trail stewardship, and naturalization projects. You and your children can roll up your sleeves, dig in, plant native trees or wildflowers, and then take a walk to enjoy the result together. It’s hands-on, outdoors, and ideal for a fall afternoon.

Tip: Look for short sessions (2-3 hours) if younger kids need a shorter commitment. Bring gloves, water, and maybe a camera for “before and after” photos.

2. Pack meals or food-sort with a food bank

Helping others in need is a great way to teach compassion and teamwork. Volunteering at a food bank is one of the most accessible ways to make a difference as a family. Although many food banks may require children to be older, you can often find roles where teens help sort donations or prepare care packages.

Tip: If you have younger children, consider pairing the food bank activity with a small “donation drive,” like gathering non-perishables at home. This way, everyone can contribute.

3. Support a children’s charity or mentorship organization

If you’re looking for something more interactive, consider volunteering with a children and youth-focused organization. The Catholic Children’s Aid Society of Toronto invites volunteers to become homework helpers or mentors for youth in care. While younger children may observe initially, older siblings and parents can get involved in tutoring or structured activities. Everyone can then reflect as a family afterward.

Tip: Have a conversation ahead of time with your children about the organization’s mission and frame the experience as “what we can learn” one as much as “what we can give.”

Choosing the right volunteering experience for your family

  • Short & flexible commitments: Especially with children, shorter blocks of 1–3 hours are often ideal.
  • Age-appropriate tasks: Check the organization’s minimum age. Volunteer Toronto notes that under-14s must usually be accompanied by an adult.
  • Fun element: Choose options where the family can do something hands-on together or celebrate afterward (e.g., picnic in a park).
  • Debrief time: After volunteering, take 10-15 minutes as a family to reflect. What felt good? What surprised you? What might you do differently next time?
