Why Camping is the Best Family Activity

When spring comes, we have a lot on our to-do lists. We schedule time to do some spring cleaning by sweeping the porch and deep cleaning the house, cultivate flowers in our gardens, take a casual evening stroll, and enjoy the sunlight. But where does family time fit into this schedule?

When you go out with your family and take part in fun activities, everyone benefits. Camping is an option you can consider. Some benefits of camping with your family are listed below.

1. Bond with family and learn more about them

When you sit down with family, you will find yourself laughing, joking, and having a good time. Spending quality time with family is what psychologists recommend for good bonding, but in our daily lives, we often don’t make time for this.

When camping, you and your family can bond by flying kites, riding a bike in the wilderness, hiking, and more. During meals and during evenings, “tent talks” are fun because you can discover valuable knowledge about each other that you never thought about discussing before. Your child may open up about their anxiety, your partner may share a dream they had never shared before with you, or your parents could discuss their hopes for you. As a family, you could reminisce about good times and forgotten traditions.

2. Make memories

The best part of camping is that years later, the silly mishaps will make you laugh. Examples could be:

  • “Remember when we were climbing the trees and one of my shoes fell off?”
  • “Remember when Dad used sugar instead of salt on our barbecue?”

All these memories will linger on in your heart for the rest of your life, binding you and your family together.

3. Appreciate nature

Children learn better when they are actively engaged. They cannot learn to swim by just reading about it. They must enter the water, move their bodies, and hold their breath. Camping immerses children in the colours of nature through stargazing, walking through forests, watching sunrises, enjoying sunsets, and beholding the charm of campfires.

Children cannot learn to appreciate nature simply by celebrating Earth Day every year. They must leave the “screen world” and enter the “green world.”

4. Improve resilience and self-confidence

Children who are confident in themselves are often better at dealing with adversity in life. Preparing a meal on a camp stove, putting up a tent, starting a fire, and other camping skills all help children come into their own. They will understand that it takes several tries to light a fire and it’s okay that they left the bug spray at home.

Conclusion

Camping is an underrated activity when it comes to family bonding. Get out of your comfort zone this spring and try camping. We are sure you and your kids will have fun and the rewards are countless. The memories you make will last a lifetime.

At Green Schools Green Future, we promote using hands-on experiences to educate children about nature and healthy living. That is not only good for their mental and physical health, but it is also good for the environment.
