Many people prefer summer over fall and winter. Still, whether you love fall or not, you and your kids can enjoy the season in several ways. We have compiled a list of the top 5 fall activities  in Canada to add to your bucket list.

1. Apple picking

Fall is an ideal time to go out and appreciate the cooler weather. What better way to do this by going apple picking? It’s a simple and classic activity which kids also love. This is a chance for even very young kids to learn about different types of apples and their lifecycles. Use this printable booklet to help you. Along with apples, you can also tell your kids about fungi, worms, pests, and why pesticides are not ideal. This way, you can turn your apple-picking trip into a fun lesson.

Some farms sell apple jams, jellies, and produce for you and your kids to enjoy. Some may also include family games and activities.

2. Visit farms

Watching farm animals on television is a good way to learn about them, but seeing them in real life is an even better one. There is no substitute for looking at chickens and their eggs up close, milking cows, or feeding horses. Children learn best through first-hand experience.

Encourage your kids to ask the farmers questions. After you get home, you can discuss your experiences with each other over dinner. You can ask them questions such as:

  • What was the most surprising thing about any of the animals?
  • Which animal was the most different in real life compared to on TV?
  • Is there anything you want to do when we visit a farm again?

3. Pick pumpkins and decorate them

Going to the pumpkin patch to choose your favourite pumpkin is also another must-do activity in fall. Like with apple picking, you can teach your kids about pumpkins.

When you’ve finished picking the pumpkins, it’s time to decorate them. Let your kids carve some of them, since this boosts their motor abilities and creativity. When they’re done, you display their works of art at home and they’ll feel proud. Make sure your kids clean up the pulp and other debris after carving.

As a bonus, you can also teach your children the importance of not wasting food. Make several dishes with the pumpkins. If you and your kids can’t eat all of them, give the leftovers to food programs in your local community.

4. Go to haunted farms at night

Test your kids’ bravery and prepare to make both fun and thrilling memories! For Halloween, take a walk through “The Cemetery Scare Zone” or try not to scream at The Hiller House. The corn mazes and farms have real actors hidden at every turn. Some have age restrictions, so be sure to check them before bringing your children.

5. Appreciate fall foliage

The beauty of autumn comes from watching the leaves change colour. If the other activities in our list are too time-consuming for your schedule, you and your kids can still enjoy fall by just taking a walk in nature. The breathtaking landscape will surely fascinate you and your kids. You can also take this time to teach children why the leaves change colour. They can also collect different coloured leaves or make piles of fallen leaves to jump in.

Conclusion

At Green Schools Green Future, we encourage students to get out in nature and appreciate all the earth has to offer. Children learn best with hands-on experience. Therefore, we highly recommend bringing your children to experience the world with you.
