July often brings soaring temperatures, making it crucial to find ways to stay cool while also being mindful of our environmental impact. At Greenschoolsgreenfuture, we believe in promoting sustainable practices that help you stay comfortable without compromising the health of our planet. What are some eco-friendly tips to keep cool during the hot July days?

  1. Practice Sun Safety While staying indoors during the hottest parts of the day is ideal, it’s not always possible. When you must be outside, keep these tips in mind:
    • Apply and reapply sunscreen frequently.
    • Wear a hat to protect your head.
    • Take regular breaks indoors or in shaded areas to prevent heat exhaustion or heatstroke.
    • Opt for light-colored, loose-fitting clothing to help stay cool.
  2. Wetter is Better Since heat escapes through the skin, the more you cool it down, the better. Here are some effective methods to beat the heat:
    • Drench and wear a wet t-shirt for continuous cooling.
    • Use cooling sprays.
    • Take cool showers (not freezing) to lower your body temperature gradually.
    • Quickly cool down by immersing your hands and feet in cold water. Wrists and ankles, with their numerous pulse points, can help you cool off faster.
  3. Stay Hydrated In hot weather, drinking plenty of water and avoiding caffeine is crucial. If possible, opt for isotonic sports drinks to replenish lost salts, sugars, and fluids. Sweating causes you to lose liquids, so water must be replaced to prevent dehydration. Signs of dehydration include:
    • Dry mouth
    • Dizziness or confusion
    • Headaches
  4. Moderate Alcohol Consumption Alcohol can cause dehydration, which is especially challenging when your body is already trying to stay cool in the summer heat. It can also disrupt sleep, which is often tricky in warmer temperatures. Although you might fall asleep quickly after drinking, your sleep quality will likely be poor, and you’ll wake up earlier than usual—not the refreshing rest you need. Unfortunately, mixing too much sun with a few too many drinks is not a good combination.
  5. Schedule Physical Activity During Cooler Hours While it’s essential to maintain your routine, sometimes hot weather requires adjustments. Exercising in the intense midday sun can be dangerous, risking dehydration, heat exhaustion, or heatstroke. Plan your day with the temperature in mind and limit physical activity to cooler parts of the day. If you choose to work out or play sports, stay hydrated and take more breaks than usual to avoid overstraining your body. After exercising, take a lukewarm or cool shower to help cool down.
  6. Have Your Cool Corner at Home During hot weather, it’s critical to make your home a place you can escape the heat. Keeping your home cool is crucial, especially at night. During a heatwave, temperatures often stay high even at night, making it difficult to get a good night’s sleep. Take steps to keep your home cool and nap during a heatwave by following our advice.
  7. Use Natural Cooling Products, Shades, and Curtains Opt for natural cooling products like aloe vera gel or peppermint oil. These provide a cooling sensation on the skin without chemical-laden products. To block out the sun’s heat, keep shades, curtains, or blinds closed during the hottest parts of the day. Consider using blackout curtains for an even greater cooling effect.

Staying cool during the hot July days doesn’t have to come at the expense of our environment. By adopting these eco-friendly tips to keep cool, you can maintain your comfort while reducing your carbon footprint. At Green Schools Green Future, we encourage sustainable living practices that benefit you and the planet. Your participation in our team is crucial to spreading GSGF’s mission. Every donation is vital to our project! Embrace these strategies to enjoy a cooler, greener summer.
