In 2020, adults and children alike have become accustomed to the new world of work in regards to career and education. But what are the long term effects of this new lifestyle? We have become comfortable with the presence of modern technology in our smart homes. However, we often focus on the effects these products have on our mental and social lives, while many of us are unaware of the physical harm and lingering issues that may develop over time to our bodies.

Background on EMFs

Electromagnetic Fields, or EMFs, have been a concern for experts for many years. With the work-from-home spike, the effects are greater than ever. Our smartphones, Wi-Fi routers, laptops, and other devices/appliances around the house all send out invisible energy waves which pose a danger to our physical and mental health. Our technologies release low-level radiation and go unrecognized for the most part. As a parent, it is important to protect both your children and yourself by understanding the dangers behind EMF radiation.

What are the Effects of EMFs?

The long term effects of EMF are still somewhat uncertain as technology continues to advance rapidly. No one knows how harmful of an effect ample screen time will have on Generation Z in 20, 50 or 70 years. Nonetheless, scientists have conducted research and discovered concerning connections between EMF radiation and negative health effects.

Studies drew links between exposure to low-level EMFs and the following health issues:

  • headaches
  • stress
  • disrupted of sleep due to reduced melatonin
  • memory loss
  • fatigue
  • melanoma of the eye
  • weakened immune systems
  • increased levels of depression and anxiety

While these findings are already worrisome to most, scientists have also connected EMF exposure to:

  • genetic damage
  • infertility

The spike in women’s infertility over the last few decades is already worrisome, but EMFs contribute to the growing statistics. EMF radiation is linked to disruptions in the biological makeup of cells in the body, hindering fertility. This exposure may arise from behaviours such as carrying phones in front pockets close to the chest or putting laptops directly on the lap while working.

  • pregnancy loss
  • brain tumours
  • lower sperm counts

EMFs have been connected to lower sperm counts in men and experts worry that keeping phones in front pockets of pants is a contributing behaviour to this finding.

How to Protect Yourself Against Exposure to EMFs

We can’t escape EMFs in this day and age, but we can still take steps to protect ourselves and our families. Here are five simple actions you can take to limit your EMF exposure and safe-guard your home:

1. Don’t put your phone on your bedside or beside you on the bed

It may be your habit to keep your phone near you when you sleep. However, you are exposing yourself to EMFs all night long. Put your phone farther away, such as on your desk or in your backpack.

2. Keep your router away from your desk

Most people today cannot live, work, and/or play without a stable WiFi connection. It is logical for most people to bring the Wi-Fi router closer to their office space, or areas of high traffic like your kitchen or living room, in the hope of a stronger connection. However,  it is in your best interest to maintain a distance from these devices. When using WiFi, keep the router a safe distance away from where you work or high traffic areas of your home. Turn off your router when it is not in use, especially when you go to sleep.

3. Put calls on speaker or use DefenderShield

Holding the phone directly to your ear exposes you to EMF radiation. Instead, simply use the speaker function on your phone for your calls to reduce exposure. Another option is to try Defender Shield’s products which create six-foot protective fields and neutralize radiation.

3. Use Bluetooth devices wisely or try wired alternatives

With hands-free technology becoming more prominent, it is easy to use Bluetooth technology in our daily lives. The Apple watch, Beats headphones, Airpods, fitness watches, Siri, Alexa, and Google Home among many others have become staples in our households. Turn off the Bluetooth function when you’re not using it and when you’re sleeping, put your phone in airplane mode. Another option is to try wired headphones instead of Bluetooth ones.

4. Use Himalayan salt lamps

Salt lamps are recognized room detoxifiers and benefits linked to them include clearing air and helping with asthma. However, many don’t know they can also help reduce EMF exposure because the crystals absorb and refract light. Having a salt lamp on your desk or nightstand can help neutralize EMF radiation floating throughout your office or bedroom.

5. Use the Qi (pronounced “key”) Shield

The Qi Shield is a portable device designed for offices, bedrooms, cars/vehicles, and small homes to protect against radiation by neutralizing it. The device comes in different sizes to accommodate your needs and your space. Get one for peace of mind as you carry out your daily routine.

Concluding Thoughts: EMFs and Our WiFi-Reliant World

Scientists have not fully grasped how EMF exposure will affect today’s youth who spend far more time with screens than any previous generation. While we know some problems associated with screens, from diminished eyesight to infertility, the full effects are unknown. As research continues, use our tips to reduce EMF exposure and protect you and your family.

According to the World Health Organization, radiation from WiFi may contribute to cancer risk. Their studies allowed them to place WiFi into the same category as lead exposure and smoking, two other matters which took time and research to fully understand their dangers.

With online learning and remote work, our reliance on WiFi and electronic technologies is inevitable. It is important to understand the risks and do what you can to keep yourself,  your family, and the planet healthy.
