5G and the Future of Mobile Education?
When you think of cell phone data, you might think of 5G. In 2020, the internet is already abuzz with the implementation of new data towers. 5G has also become a rather contentious subject. Supporters welcome the increased connectivity it offers, while critics are concerned about its health effects.
In 2018, the US Department of Health found that in rats, exposure to high amounts of radiofrequency radiation led to cardiac tumors. However, there isn’t any conclusive evidence that the radiation can also cause cancer in humans.
Regardless, whether you’re a supporter or critic, 5G is here to stay.
At GSGF, we look at digital technology, including 5G, as a way to help children develop. Our programs are designed to helps students learn future-ready skills for the late 21st century.
What Does 5G Give Us?
With 5G, connectivity is becoming even more instant. With peak speeds of up to 20Gbps, we’ll be able to enjoy all sorts of media easily. 5G is already in 37 countries and experts are looking into what it can contribute to virtual reality. If you thought keeping kids away from Netflix was hard, just wait until you have to pry them from their VR headsets.
Approaching 5G: Be Cautious
As exciting as 5G seems, we still don’t know a whole lot about its effects on our health. While the WHO and IARC have declared that radio frequencies are only a possible cancer risk, medical experts, such as Swedish oncologist Lennart Hardell, emphasize the need for further studies.
GSGF’s Stance
At GSGF, we share these concerns. We believe in scientific evidence and being aware of all the facts before adopting new technology. We aim to help students stay informed and think critically to navigate new technology. To raise the next generation of innovators, we have made sure that our curriculum covers a wide range of topics.
