In a move\u00a0described<\/a>\u00a0by some political figures and privacy advocates as \u201cdangerous,\u201d Amazon said it\u00a0agreed to a $3.9 billion all-cash deal<\/a>\u00a0to buy One Medical, a San Francisco-based private health services provider.<\/p>\r\n

If completed, the deal will give Amazon access to One Medical\u2019s 188 primary care practices and its 767,000 members, who pay approximately $200 in concierge fees annually to access the provider\u2019s services,\u00a0CNBC reported.<\/a><\/p>\r\n

Amazon also will acquire\u00a0One Medical\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0subscription telehealth service, in-house electronic health-record system and established contracts with employers who hire One Medical to provide healthcare services to their employees.<\/p>\r\n

The One Medical transaction\u00a0represents<\/a>\u00a0Amazon\u2019s third-largest acquisition, following Whole Foods ($13.7 billion) and MGM Studios ($8.5 billion).<\/p>\r\n

One Medical\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0a net loss of $90.9 million for the quarter ending March 31, according to its most recent filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.<\/p>\r\n

Amazon and One Medical said the deal reflects their shared objective to \u201creinvent\u201d healthcare.<\/p>\r\n

Neil Lindsay, Amazon\u2019s senior vice president of health services,\u00a0told The Washington Post<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 owned by Amazon founder and executive chairman\u00a0Jeff Bezos<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 that \u201cwe think healthcare is high on the list of experiences that need reinvention.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

\u201cWe love inventing to make what should be easy easier and we want to be one of the companies that helps dramatically improve the healthcare experience over the next several years.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

One Medical CEO Amir Dan Rubin \u2014 who will\u00a0continue<\/a>\u00a0to run the company after the purchase is finalized \u2014\u00a0described<\/a>\u00a0the deal as presenting \u201can immense opportunity to make the healthcare experience more accessible, affordable, and even enjoyable.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

The One Medical deal is Amazon\u2019s latest in a string of\u00a0acquisitions<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0partnerships<\/a>\u00a0focused on the tech giant\u2019s\u00a0rapidly expanding<\/a>\u00a0healthcare division.<\/p>\r\n

It also signals Amazon\u2019s\u00a0ongoing attraction<\/a>\u00a0to the healthcare sector, which accounts for approximately one-fifth ($3.8 trillion<\/a>) of all spending in the U.S.<\/p>\r\n

Not everyone sees the deal as a positive \u201copportunity\u201d for healthcare consumers \u2014\u00a0 including some members of Congress and advocacy groups who cited antitrust considerations, others who raised privacy concerns and suggested the deal could undermine Medicare.<\/p>\r\n

Amazon \u2018has a history of engaging in business practices that raise serious anticompetitive concern\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

Amazon\u2019s purchase of One Medical is subject to the normal regulatory approval process, according to\u00a0The Lever<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

But the deal immediately raised red flags among some members of the U.S. Senate, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who\u00a0demanded<\/a>\u00a0the U.S. Department of Justice reject Amazon\u2019s acquisition of One Medical.<\/p>\r\n
