The device registers this electrical charge as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hp.com\/us-en\/shop\/tech-takes\/how-do-touch-screens-work\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.hp.com\/us-en\/shop\/tech-takes\/how-do-touch-screens-work&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1632338929071000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH59lTHPB0nUbAJ3ApY2weMmziYug\">touch event<\/a>\u201d, then prompting a response.<\/p><ol start=\"2\"><li><strong> Display<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>Smartphones screens display images on a liquid crystal display (LCD). Just like in most TVs and computer monitors, a phone LCD uses an electrical current to adjust the color of each pixel.<\/p><p>Several\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/chinas-dominance-in-rare-earth-metals\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/chinas-dominance-in-rare-earth-metals\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1632338929071000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHfKAtiIYSDKrICPYOIzBnWY0vYmA\">rare earth elements<\/a>\u00a0are used to produce the colors on screen.<\/p><ol start=\"3\"><li><strong> Electronics<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>Smartphones employ multiple antenna systems, such as Bluetooth, GPS, and WiFi.<\/p><p>The distance between these antenna systems is usually small making it extremely difficult to achieve flawless performance. Capacitors made of the rare, hard, blue-gray metal tantalum are used for filtering and frequency tuning.<\/p><p>Nickel is also used in capacitors and in mobile phone electrical connections. Another silvery metal, gallium, is used in semiconductors.<\/p><ol start=\"4\"><li><strong> Microphone, Speakers, Vibration Unit<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>Nickel is used in the microphone diaphragm (that vibrates in response to sound waves).<\/p><p>Alloys containing rare earths neodymium, praseodymium and gadolinium are used in the magnets contained in the speaker and microphone. Neodymium, terbium and dysprosium are also used in the vibration unit.<\/p><ol start=\"5\"><li><strong> Casing<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>There are many materials used to make phone cases, such as plastic, aluminum, carbon fiber, and even\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=S60VorwO8_U\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v%3DS60VorwO8_U&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1632338929071000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHEccT7INz2xmZ0NzvtiRObFYrSGw\">gold<\/a>. Commonly, the cases have nickel to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI) and magnesium alloys for EMI shielding.<\/p><ol start=\"6\"><li><strong> Battery<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>Unless you bought your smartphone a decade ago, your device most likely carries a lithium-ion battery, which is charged and discharged by lithium ions moving between the negative (anode) and positive (cathode) electrodes.<\/p><h3><strong>What\u2019s Next?<\/strong><\/h3><p>Smartphones will naturally evolve as consumers look for ever-more useful features.
