As a part of the Solar Decathlon Build Challenge, a competition by the Department of Energy, 9 innovative and eco-friendly house designs emerged. The competition, which takes place every 2 years, challenges teams from universities across Canada and the US to come up with energy-efficient houses.<\/p>

The Top Designs<\/strong><\/h2>

1. University of Colorado Boulder<\/h3>

The winning team created a 2-unit house with solar panels, efficient heating and cooling systems, and effective ventilation. Compared to the average house, this one costs roughly 90% less for utilities. It also generates and stores extra electricity. The house is topped off with a separate unit that homeowners can rent out for extra income.\u00a0<\/p>

2. University of Waterloo & Chippewas of Nawash<\/h3>

The two groups worked together to design a house to withstand freezing Ontario winters while also producing net zero emissions. The house features triple-glazed windows, tight insulation, and a hybrid water-heating system. Compared to the average house, it uses 55% less energy.<\/p>

3. University of Nevada<\/h3>

The 3rd place team constructed a house for veterans. With thick insulation, solar panels, courtyards covered in shade, solar panels, and battery storage, the house can stay powered off the grid for as long as 3 days. The house also has hydroponic vines to cool down the place naturally. These features make the house ideal for a desert environment.<\/p>

Impact of Sustainable Housing Designs<\/strong><\/h2>

Construction for the 9 design entries started in 2019, but the Covid-19 pandemic created delays. Most of the teams built the houses on their own with help from Habitat for Humanity. In previous years of the Solar Decathlon Build Challenge, the houses were displayed on the National Mall in DC. But this year, the public can view the houses online.<\/p>

These inventive housing designs have the power to make the housing construction industry more eco-friendly. As housing prices only continue to skyrocket and climate change poses risks to all of us, affordable and energy-efficient houses are what we need.<\/p>
