Packaging is one major contributor to this issue.<\/p><p data-start=\"369\" data-end=\"692\">The Covid-19 pandemic brought high demand for takeout and delivery. Restaurants also had to move away from reusable containers due to Covid-19 concerns.\u00a0<\/p><h2 data-start=\"694\" data-end=\"724\"><strong>High Costs of Eco-Friendly Packaging<\/strong><\/h2><p data-start=\"725\" data-end=\"1029\">Aside from the pandemic, greener packaging is also more costly and likely require restaurants to tweak their operation processes. These factors make it difficult for restaurants to quickly make a change. Many are already struggling during the pandemic as is.<\/p><h2 data-start=\"1118\" data-end=\"1151\"><strong>Examples of Restaurants Trying Out Greener Packaging<\/strong><\/h2><ul data-start=\"1152\" data-end=\"2121\"><li data-start=\"1152\" data-end=\"1406\"><p data-start=\"1154\" data-end=\"1406\"><strong data-start=\"1154\" data-end=\"1168\">Just Salad<\/strong> has recently expanded its reusable bowl program from regular orders to digital ones.\u00a0 The company also highlighted its zero waste delivery initiative. Just Salad also rolled out a plastic-free meal kit service that give customers just the right amount of ingredients to reduce waste.\u00a0<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1407\" data-end=\"1587\"><p data-start=\"1409\" data-end=\"1587\"><strong data-start=\"1409\" data-end=\"1423\">Sweetgreen<\/strong> has made a goal to be carbon neutral by 2027. The company already uses compostable takeout containers, making it more of a leader in the sustainability space.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1588\" data-end=\"1718\"><p data-start=\"1590\" data-end=\"1718\"><strong data-start=\"1590\" data-end=\"1605\">Burger King<\/strong> is working with Loop, a circular packaging company. They will introduce reusable containers in this pilot project.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1719\" data-end=\"1837\"><p data-start=\"1721\" data-end=\"1837\"><strong data-start=\"1721\" data-end=\"1735\">McDonald\u2019s<\/strong> is doing something similar as Burger King with a Loop collaboration. In its German locations, the massive chain is also testing reusable systems.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1719\" data-end=\"1837\"><p data-start=\"1721\" data-end=\"1837\">In terms of startups, some are working with restaurants to roll out both reusable containers and automated cleaning processes. They include <strong>DeliverZero<\/strong> in New York and <strong>Dishcraft Robotics<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"2157\" data-end=\"2405\">The issue of packaging is an opportunity for restaurants to innovate. Not only can eco-friendly packaging help the environment but it can also keep food warmer for longer, which is especially helpful for deliveries.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><h2 data-start=\"2558\" data-end=\"2576\"><strong>A Gradual Process of Change<\/strong><\/h2><p data-start=\"2577\" data-end=\"2844\">Making packaging better for customers and the planet is a collaborative effort. Restaurants will need to work with designers, regulators, and scientists.<\/p><p data-start=\"2577\" data-end=\"2844\">The shift from cheap, disposable containers to costly reusable and recyclable options will take time. Still, several restaurants are making progress.
