Education. The meaning of this term has changed over decades. Even today, most people do not know what education really means. The standard definition, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is: \u201cthe field of study that deals mainly with methods of teaching and learning in schools.\u201d Education is often confused with schooling, but they are not the same thing.<\/p>

As John Dewey, an American philosopher and educational reformer put it, education is a social process of living and not preparation for future living. It is a process of inviting truth and possibility, of encouraging and giving time to discovery. Education is life-long. With constant changes happening around us at breakneck speed, we need to keep picking up new skills and strategies to navigate the world. That can happen only through educating ourselves, even as adults.<\/p>

Prioritize Life Skills<\/b><\/h2>

The role of educators in the 21st century is very different from what it was in the 20th century. It’s not just the addition of STEAM classes and more technical training. Students have to be taught how to learn as learning something is in itself a skill. It requires an open mind, curiosity, and resilience to dig deeper. Life skills such as decision making, leadership, negotiation, entrepreneurial ability, empathizing with others, and coping with stress should also be a part of the curriculum.<\/p>

Students today need to gain the necessary skills to cope with the changes throughout their lives. Many jobs will disappear as technology advances and new positions will emerge. Therefore, adopting a skill-based approach to career preparation is better than a position-based one.<\/p>

Unlearning\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>

This is an overlooked aspect of education because most educators focus on teaching students to learn something. Knowing how to let go of a piece of information, skill, or habit and replace it with something better is important. Unlearning something requires openness and willingness to pursue the unfamiliar. In order to thrive, people cannot rely on obsolete knowledge and instead must continue to learn, unlearn, and relearn.<\/p>

Lifelong Learning<\/b><\/h2>

Education in its true sense is about learning all through your life. Maintain a positive attitude to learning for both personal and professional development. Even if you think you are knowledgeable about something, there is always new information, findings, and perspectives for you to learn.<\/p>

Power The Future With Green Education<\/b><\/h2>

With the climate crisis looming over our heads, we must make green education a part of school system and foster open conversations about sustainability. This includes educating children about our environmental impact, the consequences, and how we can better approach nature. They should learn about practices such as reducing food waste, growing our own food, and using reusable items instead of single-use plastics. Children should also learn to question the claims of corporations and organizations.<\/p>

Through hands-on activities and skill-based teaching, we will create the next generation of responsible green leaders.
