We all love technology devices, but do we know they produce radiation?
Today we can find electronic devices that transmit data over the air everywhere. People are constantly bombarded with wireless signals via Wi-Fi, cell phones, and other networks. To send and receive data, these devices employ radio frequency (RF) energy. Radiofrequency energy is a type of electromagnetic radiation; it’s utilized to send out data-carrying messages in the form of radio waves.
When you speak on a mobile phone, your phone works as a transmitter, and your voice is sent to the person you’re contacting through radio waves. Their phone serves as a receiver, converting the signal into your voice. Another example could be wireless headphones. Wireless headphones like the Apple AirPods and others, on the other hand, are a problem when it comes to radiation and safety since you’re placing a strong, RF-transmitting, mini-computer inside your ear canal, which is incredibly close to your brain.
When radiofrequency energy is strong, it can be dangerous. RF radiation from Bluetooth devices such as Apple’s Airpods, cellphones, computers and others have the potential to harm human health. It always depends on the amount of energy from RF we are exposed to.
Many factors can influence how much energy a person is exposed to via RF waves, including:
- The time spent on the phone by the person.
- Whether the user is talking on the phone while holding it near to his or her ear or utilizing speaker mode or a hands-free device. The more removed a phone is from a person’s body, the less vulnerable they are.
- The distance between you, and the nearest cell phone tower. Cell phones alter their power to utilize the least amount possible to maintain a strong signal. Being inside a structure, as well as being farther away from the tower, needs more energy to obtain a decent signal.
- At the time, the volume of cell phone traffic in the region. Increased traffic (due to many people using mobile phones) may necessitate more energy to obtain a decent signal.
- The phone model that is being utilized. The quantity of energy emitted by different phones varies.
The quantity of RF energy absorbed by the user’s body is measured by the specific absorption rate (SAR). According to scientists’ safety recommendations, the maximum SAR permitted is 1.6 watts per kilogram (W/kg) of body weight. And some of these devices produce up to seven times more than the amount our bodies should receive.
People who are worried about RF waves can take a few steps to reduce their exposure.
- Use a hands-free device or the phone’s speaker mode or video chat function.
- Another strategy to limit your exposure is to text rather than converse on the phone.
- Cell phone usage should be limited for you (and your children).
We don’t have to stop using our technology devices, we should only measure their use of them.
Therefore, in Green School Green Future we emphasize learning not only using technology but also using our knowledge whether associative, observational, discovering, etc. We want to develop a fresh, innovative, and environmentally friendly education system in communities all over the world where students can use more sustainable resources and hands-on applications.
